Neurodivergent
- Individuals who have a variation in neurological development + functioning
- E.g. those with ASD, ADHD + dyslexia
Autism spectrum disorder (ASD)
- A neurodevelopmental condition
- Categorised by symptoms from early childhood
Autism symptoms
- Communication difficulties
- Narrow interests
- Repetitive behaviour
Autism: strengths + challenges
STRENGTHS:
- High attention to detail
- Innovative approaches to problem-solving
CHALLENGES:
- Delayed cognitive/learning/movement skills
- Distressed by minor changes in routine
Central coherence
Ability to derive overall meaning from a mass of details
Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)
- A neurological condition
- Can affect some areas of brain function
- Categorised by persistent inattention/hyperactivity that disrupts social, academic or occupational functioning
ADHD: strengths + challenges
STRENGTHS:
- Hyper focus
- Creative approaches
CHALLENGES:
- Time management/staying focused
- Acting with rationality
Dyslexia
- Neurologically-based learning difficulty
- Displayed as severe challenges in reading, writing, spelling, + sometimes arithmetic
Dyslexia: strengths + challenges
STRENGTHS:
- Strong memory
- Big-picture thinking
CHALLENGES:
- Difficulties with reading + writing
- Trouble understanding jokes
