Unit 11 vocab Flashcards
Clandestine
Done in secret; kept hidden
(The group had a clandestine meeting underground to avoid being found by their enemies.)
Contingency
A possible future event that must be prepared for or guarded against; possibility
(Remember to always have a contingency plan in place in case things don’t go as expected.)
Egocentric
Self-centered; seeing everything in terms of oneself
(His egocentric personality was so intense, he probably thinks the sun rises and sets just for him.)
Exonerate
To clear of an accusation or charge; prove innocent
(My dog tried to exonerate himself from eating the whole cake by giving me a guilt trip with his puppy eyes.)
Incongruous
Out of place; having parts that are not in harmony or that are inconsistent
(It was incongruous to see a clown walking into a board meeting wearing oversized shoes and a red nose, but we all needed a good laugh that day.)
Indigenous
Living, growing, or produced naturally in a particular place; native
(Indigenous peoples have a deep connection to their land and culture that should be respected and honored.)
Liability
Something that acts as a disadvantage; a drawback
(Having a pet monkey may seem like a fun idea, but the liability of cleaning up after them is no laughing matter.)
Prolific
Producing many works, results, or offspring; fertile
(My cat is more prolific at knocking things off the table than I am at actually getting work done.)
Reinstate
To restore to a previous position or condition; bring back into being or use
(We need to reinstate the password on my phone because too many people knew the code.)
Superfluous
Beyond what is needed, wanted, or useful; extra
(When writing a long message, it’s best to avoid using superfluous words that may distract the reader from the main point.)
