Reconstruction
the effort to reintegrate Southern states from the Confederacy and 4 million newly freed people into the United States
What are black codes?
laws passed in Southern states after the Civil War to restrict the rights of Black people
What does segregation mean?
the action of separating people, historically based on race and/or gender
13th Amendment
To abolish slavery in the United States.
14th Amendment
everyone born in the United States is a citizen and all states must treat everyone fairly under the law, ensuring equal protection.
15th Amendment
prohibits the denial of voting rights based on race, color, or previous condition of servitude
Ku Klux Klan
A secret organization that used terrorist tactics in an attempt to restore white supremacy in Southern states after the Civil War.
Sharecropping
A system used on southern farms after the Civil War in which farmers worked land owned by someone else in return for a small portion of the crops.
