Unit 1.0: Force Field Flashcards
What is force?
Force is a external cause. It can push or pull objects without coming in contact with them. It can make a object in rest, go in motion, and one in motion, go to rest. The object moves/stops in the driection force is applied.
What is static electricity?
The build-up of excess positive or negative charge in an object. The object that accepts electrons becomes negatively charged while the object giving out electrons becomes positively charged. The object will keep the excess charge until it comes in contact or close to another object.
What are the properties of charges?
Like charges repel
Unlike charges attract
What is Charging by conduction?
The flow of charged particles that takes place when two objects are touching.
What is charging by induction?
The flow of charged particles when two object are close together. During electrical induction the ends close together will have opposite charge.
What is lightning and how does it occur?
Lightning is a white dazzling light you see in the sky. It occurs because during a storm electric charge build up in a cloud. The top of the cloud has positive electrons while the bottom has negative electrons. The negative electrons in the cloud are attracted to the positive electrons in the grounds causing lightning. This is induction.
Explain the magnetic field across a conductor and a wire around it?
A conductor gets magnetized when the wire around it has electricity running through it. The conductor has the most magnetism closer to the wire. The magnetic field lines vary depending on the shape of the conductor
What is current electricity?
flow of electric charges. It can’t flow through gaps in its path,
What is static discharge?
The flow of charge
What are rigid bodies?
Bodies that are unchanged when force is applied
What are non-rigid bodies?
Bodies that will be in motion when force is applied
What are magnets?
Substances that contain minerals are made magnetic by the earth’s magnetic field. They are derived from the word magnesia. A magnetic field is an area around a magnet where its magnetic properties take place. Lodestone is a natural magnet. Poles (North and south) have the most magnetic power. Unlike poles attract and like poles repel.
What is induced magnetism?
The temporary magnetism is acquired by a magnetic material when it is kept near a magnet.
What are the properties of Magnetic field lines?
- Magnetic field lines are closed and continuous curves.
- Outside the magnet they are directed from north to south pole
- They never intercept one other
- They are crowded near poles of magnet where the magnetic field is strong
- They are parallel and have an equal distance between one other
- They behave like stretched elastic rubber strings
What is a permanent magnet?
It is an object that keeps its magnetism after it has been magnetized. They can be natural magnets.
