Unit 10 Endocrine Flashcards
Amine hormones
Hormones made from a specific amino acid
Adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH)
Hormone secreted by the anterior lobe of the pituitary gland that stimulates the adrenal cortex to produce cortisol
Peptide hormone
Type of hormone that is a protein, a peptide or derived from an amino acid
Steroid hormone
Type of hormone that has the same complex of four carbon rings bit each one has different side chains
Hormone
Substances secreted by an endocrine gland that is transmitted in the blood or body fluid
Thyrotropin
Hormone secreted by the anterior pituitary gland that regulates the formation and secretion of thyroid hormoneb also called thyroid stimulating hormone TSH
Pituitary dwarfism
Condition in which a person has normal proportions but small stature
Diabetes insipidus
Condition characterized by an abnormally large production of urine due to deficiency of anti diuretic hormone
Gonadotropic hormone
Type of hormone that regulates the activity of the ovaries and testiesb principally follicle stimulating hormone and luteinizing hormone
Positive feedback
Process in which changes cause more of a similar type producing unstable conditions
Hypercalcemia
A condition resulting from excessive parathyroid hormone sectetion
Thyroid gland
Endocrine gland located just below the larynx and in fromt of the trachea that secretes thyroid hormones
Triiodothyronine T3
Hormone produced by the thyroid that speeds up the metabolic rate
Norepinephrine
Hormone excreted by the adrenal medulla to help initiate flight or flight reaction
Mineralocorticoid
Hormone that the adrenal cortex secretes that influence the concentrations of electrolytes in body fluids
