Political parties have a number of key roles in our political system. Political parties:

-nominate candidates;
-conduct election campaigns;

-provide vehicles for debating policy options; and,
- translate values into legislation.
Political parties typically have three main organizational parts:
1.party in public office
2.party in central office
3.Party on the ground
Most recognizable. Includes the leader of the party and the elected officials in the legislature/caucus. They are increasingly dominant within the party, and are getting a larger and larger say over party policy, strategy, and so on.
Party in public office
Composed of paid permanent staff at party headquarters. Manages financing and promotion. Also includes the consultants and employees who are hired on a temporary basis during election campaigns.
Party in central office
Includes party members in local and regional associations. They are most recognizable when they do the ‘door-to door’ things during political campaigns. They are also active, but less prominent, in between campaigns.
