festivals, carnivals, religion, consolation from the church, wanting moral direction and hope, astrology and holidays/celebrations

the significance of ritual
A
- before the protestant reformation (began around 1517), were loyal to the catholic church
- reformation was critical of catholic church and his corrupt state, they thought catholicism was too indulgent
- up until the reformation, people had the same rituals (religious variations) as they followed the same belief system (holy days/celebrations)

- the celebration/ritual enforced communal ties and enhanced local pride
- special occasions were used to celebrate festivals
- break from day to day grind
