what is the Canada health act
- federal legislation for health care insurance that is publically funded.
- Its objective is to set out health care policy ‘to protect, promote, and restore the physical and mental well-being of residents of Canada and to facilitate reasonable access to health services without financial or other barriers
primary prevention
Is aimed at preventing the onset of a disease/condition
secondary prevention
Is aimed at early diagnosis and prompt treatment
tertiary prevention
Is aimed at decreasing complications and negative health effects in an individual with established disease
examples of primary prevention
Immunizations, bike helmets, car restraints (car seats for children), providing education and counseling regarding healthy lifestyles, diet, exercise, and stress reduction.

2 main purposes of the MHA
- provide authority, criteria and procedures for involuntary admission and tx
- protect the rights of people involuntarily admitted by ensuring provisions are applied in an appropriate and lawful manner
what are 3 methods of arranging for involuntary admission
- medical certificate (form #4)
- police intervention (section 28) = police apprehend person and take to a physician (usually in hospital) for examination who then determines if the patient is certifiable or not. If yes- then physician would complete a Form #4
- An order by a judge- if no judge is available- then a justice of the peace.
Form 10 is completed by the judge
Form 9 would is completed by anyone with a reason to believe a person meets criteria for involuntary admission.
