Unit 1 Week 9/21-9/25 Vocabulary Flashcards
Organism
A living thing
Homeostasis
maintenance of stable internal conditions despite the outside surroundings
Autotroph
organisms that make their own food (photosynthesis)
Heterotroph
organisms that cannot make their own food. They eat autotrophs or other heterotrophs
Cell Wall
rigid outer layer of a plant cell
Cell Membrane
Controls what comes into and out of a cell; found in plant and animal cells
Cytoplasm
Gel-like fluid where the organelles are found
Vacuole
Store food, water, waste, and other materials
Lysosomes
Use chemicals to break down food and worn out cell parts
Nucleus
Contains DNA, which controls the function of the cell and production of proteins
Golgi bodies
Receives proteins and materials from the endoplasmic reticulum, packages them, and distributes them
Chloroplast
Captures energy from the sunlight and uses it to produce food in plant cells
Endoplasmic Reticulum
Has passageways that carry proteins and other materials from one part of the cell to another
Mitochondria
produces the energy a cell needs to carry out its functions
Ribosomes
Assembles amino acids to create proteins
