Unit 1 Week 9/14-9/18 Vocabulary Flashcards
Scientific method
A six step process for experimentation that is used to explore observations and answer questions.
Steps in the scientific method
- Problem/observation
- Research
- Hypothesis
- Experiment
- Conclusion
- Communicate
Hypothesis
An educated guess about how things work. Written in an “If, then” sentence.
Independent Variable (Cause)
The variable that is changed by the scientist in an experiment
Dependent Variable (Effect)
The variable that changes because of the independent variable. What is being measured
Constants
Factors in the experiment that stay the same
Control
The normal group in the experiment
Conclusion
Summarizes how your results support or contradict your hypothesis
Trials
A fixed number of repetitions of the same experiment
Observation
Using your senses to describe something
Inference
A prediction of what is happening based on observations made
Qualitative data
Data that can be observed through your five senses
Quantitative data
Numerical data
Mass
measures the amount of matter in an object. Measured in grams (g)
Volume
The amount of space the object takes up. Measured in liters (L)
