Unit 1 weather dynamics Flashcards
A cool, dry air mass which forms over the land in the far North.
Continental Polar air mass
A movement of air from a high pressure system to a low pressure system
Wind
The concept that an object moving straight across a rotating surface will have its path twist to the right or left.
Coriolis Effect
A warm, moist air mass which forms over the Caribbean
Maritime Tropical Air mass
A large wind pattern in both the Northern and Southern Hemispheres, between the latitudes of 30o and 60o.
Mid latitude westerlies (Prevailing Westerlies)
High speed winds at high altitudes (~7000m) at the latitudes 30o and 60o; have the ability to steer weather patterns.
Jet Stream
The ocean current which forms near the Carribean and follows the east coast of North America up to Newfoundland. (Slow and Warm)
Gulf Stream
Large bodies of air in which the temperature and moisture content at a specific height are the same.
Air Mass
Advancing warm air displaces cold air along a warm front, which develops a gradual boundary slope.
Warm Front
When cold, dense air displaces warm air, it forces the warm air which is less dense, up along a steep slope.
Cold front
develops as a result of
the meeting of two air
masses with different
characteristics
Front
When two air masses meet but neither advances, the boundary between them stalls.
Stationary front
Sometimes a cold air mass moves so fast that it overtakes a warm front forcing the warm air up
Occluded Front
