Culture
Beliefs and action which define a groups way of life
Folk Culture
Culture practiced by smaller groups that are homogenous and live in isolated areas
Popular Culture
Dominant culture spread due to rapid, continuous global connections b/w peopel
Origin
Where are culture comes from (sometimes called a “cultural hearth”)
Cultural Diffusion
How a culture is transmitted from one place to another
Cultural Distribution
Where we find a culture and where it spreads
Cultural Region
A particular place defined by the dominant culture present
Assimilation
The process by which a group’s culture features are altered to resemble those of a more dominant group (to “fit in”)
Multiculturalism
Presence of multiple cultures in a society
Pluralism
A form of society in which the members of minority groups maintain their cultural traditions (MUST BE A LAW COMPONENT)
Why do languages change
Migration; less connection to original people leads to more changes
Institutional Language
Used in education, work, mass media and government (everyday language)
Official Language
Designated by government to be used in legal docs, road signs, etc
Literary Tradition
Language which is written as well as spoken using an alphabet
Language Family
Collection of languages with common ancestor
