Cannon:
War weapon.
Genghis Khan:
Mongolian warrior-ruler, and one of history’s greatest conquerors. (Ruled from 1206-August 1227.)
Gobi Desert:
Asian desert stretching from South Mongolia to North China.
Golden Horde:
Mongol and later Turkicized Khanate (Con-nate,) established in the 1200’s and originating as the northwest sector of the Mongol Empire.
Hulegu:
Mongol ruler who conquered much of southwest Asia.
Il-Khanate:
Part of the Mongol Empire that covered much of modern Iran and parts of Turkmenistan, Turkey, Iraq, Armenia, Afghanistan, and Pakistan.
Khan:
Title given to Mongol leaders meaning “supreme ruler.”
Khanates:
States ruled by a Khan.
Kublai Khan:
Ruler of the Mongol Empire from 1260-1294.
Kuriltai:
Assembly of Mongolian/Turkic clans.
Ming Dynasty:
Succeeded the Mongol Yuan dynasty in China from 1368-1644.
Mongols:
Nomadic people and formidable pastoralists (cattle/sheep farmers,) who lived in the steppes of central Asia.
Moscow:
Russia’s capital city.
Pax Mongolica:
(“Mongol peace,”) describes a period of relative stability in Eurasia under the Mongol Empire during the 1200’s/1300’s.
Siege Weapons:
Weapons used to attack castles.
Uyghur Alphabet:
Version of the Arabic alphabet used to write the Uyghur language.
White Lotus Society:
Secret religious society dedicated to overthrowing the Yuan dynasty in China.
Yuan Dynasty:
(1279-1368.) China’s first foreign-ruled dynasty to commandeer the entire nation.
Zhu Yuanzhang:
Founder/first emperor of the Ming dynasty in China.
