Unit 1, Topic 5: Alkenes Flashcards
What is the general formula of alkenes?
CnH2n
Define ‘unsaturated hydrocarbon’
a substance containing hydrogen and carbon only that has C=C double bond
Define ‘stereoisomerism’
same molecular and structural formula but the different arrangement in 3D space
Why does geometric isomerism occur?
The rotation of C=C is restricted
What are the conditions for cis/trans isomers to occur?
Only used when there are two identical groups on each carbon on the double bond
cis: same atom or group of atoms on the same side
trans: same atom or group of atoms on opposite side
What are the conditions for E/Z isomers
E: groups of atoms with higher Mr on different side
Z: groups of atoms with higher Mr on same side
