Unit 1: Solar Energy: pg. 140 - 141 Flashcards
Why does the Sun look so large during the day?
The Sun is the biggest object in the Solar System and is closest to us, therefore the Sun appears the largest during the day.
What is the Sun?
The Sun is a very large ball of burning gas.
How and where is Sun’s energy produced?
The Sun’s energy is produced deep inside the core of the Sun. The Sun’s energy is produced by nuclear reactions.
What is the Sun’s energy produced by the Sun called?
Electromagnetic radiation.
What forms part of electromagnetic radiation?
Heat and light energy.
Can electromagnetic radiation travel through space?
Yes.
How is the Earth heated up by the Sun?
When the Sun’s heat energy strikes matter, the matter absorbs the energy and heats up. This is how the Earth , and many other celestial objects, is heated.
How can we see the Moon during the night?
When light energy from the Sun strikes other objects in the solar system, such as the Moon, it reflects the light back, allowing us to see the object.
What type of energy does the Earth receive?
Solar energy.
How does solar energy from the Sun support life on Earth?
Plants on Earth absorb the sunlight (solar energy) to produce food and oxygen. People and other living organisms use this food and oxygen to live.
