Unit 1: Scientific Processes Flashcards
What is a testable investigative question?
A question that can be answered through experimentation and observation.
Define hypothesis.
A proposed explanation for a phenomenon, based on observations and testable through experiments.
Name the variables in an experiment and define them.
Independent Variable: Manipulated by the experimenter.
Dependent Variable: Measured or observed.
Control Variable: Kept constant to ensure a fair experiment.
What are the elements of a testable procedure?
Includes collecting qualitative and quantitative data and representing it using appropriate graphs.
Explain the concept of experimental and control groups.
Experimental group receives the treatment, while the control group does not, used to compare the effects of a variable.
Identify the types of graphs suitable for given data.
Bar graphs for categorical data, pie charts for percentages, line graphs for trends over time.
What are the characteristics of life?
Includes biology, sexual and asexual reproduction, DNA, metabolism, stimulus response, homeostasis, and the ability to evolve.
