French And Indian War (1754-1763)
In 1754 France and England fought for control of North America. England won and they controlled all the land east of the Mississippi River. The British started taxing the American colonists to pay for the war.
The Stamp Act(1765)
placed a tax on all legal documents, licenses, newspapers, and other documents.
Boston Massacre(1771)
5 colonists were killed when they were throwing rocks and harassing the British soldier. This angered the colonists. Paul Revere made a famous engraving of it.
Boston Tea Party
The British passed the Tea Act in 1773. This allowed a British tax company to sell tea without having to pay the tax. This angered the colonists. Boston Patriots including some members of the Sons of Liberty dressed as Native Americans and threw the tea overboard.

George Washington
He fought during the French & Indian war, he lead the Continental Army, led the Constitutional Convention, and became the first president.
Ben Franklin
inventor, scientist, editor of Declaration of Independence.
Thomas Jefferson
Wrote most of the Declaration of Independence in 1776. Eventually became the 3rd president.
Benedict Arnold
Led victory at Saratoga, but became a British traitor.
Patrick Henry
Radical supporter of independence. Convinced Virginia to support independence with his speech “Give me liberty or give me death!”
John Adams
A lawyer who supported independence, helped write the Declaration of Independence, and became the second president.
Sons of Liberty
Helped organize boycotts. Used violence to protest the Stamp Act.
Daughters of Liberty
Got supplies for the Continental Army by spinning thread and weaving cloth.
Black Regiments
Close to 5 grand enslaved blacks fought for the Continental Army, with some fighting for the British.
