French And Indian War (1754-1763)

A

In 1754 France and England fought for control of North America. England won and they controlled all the land east of the Mississippi River. The British started taxing the American colonists to pay for the war.

A

placed a tax on all legal documents, licenses, newspapers, and other documents.

Boston Massacre(1771)

A

5 colonists were killed when they were throwing rocks and harassing the British soldier. This angered the colonists. Paul Revere made a famous engraving of it.

Boston Tea Party

A

The British passed the Tea Act in 1773. This allowed a British tax company to sell tea without having to pay the tax. This angered the colonists. Boston Patriots including some members of the Sons of Liberty dressed as Native Americans and threw the tea overboard.

Battle of Lexington

A
  1. British troops went to take some of the colonists weapons and were met by the colonial militia called minutemen. The first shots were fired.

Declaration of Independence

A

June 1776 the Second Continental Congress in Philadelphia decided to declare independence from Great Britain. It stated men(meaning everyone) are born with certain rights that the government cannot take away. These rights include life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. It also included a list of grievances(complaints) with the king. Written by Thomas Jefferson, John Adams, Ben Franklin, and two other men.

Saratoga

A
  1. The United States won a turning point victory in Saratoga, New York. It convinced the French to join the Americans.

Valley Forge

A

During the winter, the Americans made camp at Valley Forge. The camp was a difficult time for the Americans. They did not have enough food or supplies. They recieved training from the French and became a better trained army after.
