Globalization
The process that is making the world’s citizens increasingly interdependent economically, socially, politically, environmentally, and technologically
Retail Operations
Businesses that sell goods and services to the public
Ex: Old Navy
Transnationals
Corporations that operate in two or more countries
Ex: McDonald’s
Individual Identity
The traits that make up a person’s identity
Ex: Religion, clothing, food, traditions
Collective Identity
The combination of beliefs, values, view of history and language of a people
Ex: Language, religion, clothing, etc.
Pluralistic Society
A society in which a diversity of languages, beliefs, traditions, values, religions, and other aspects of culture are embedded as part of the foundations of a country
Ex: Canada, USA, Australia
Media Consolidation
Mergers of media transnationals that result in a concentration of ownership
Ex: Disney owning Pixar, Starwars, etc.
Society
A group of people who form an ordered community centered on kinship, an ideology, a religion, or a particular worldview
Ex: Canada
Global Village
The entire world and its inhabitants are becoming one large community interconnected by technology, particularly television
Democracy
A political system in which the law applies equally to all people
Ex: Canada
Universalization of Popular Culture
The production by media transnationals of the majority of TV programs, films, etc. that are consumed by a vast world audience
Ex: Netflix streaming shows all over the world
Hybridization
The blending of media communications technologies resulting in new modes of expression and cross curricular consumption
Ex: Kpop
Media Transnational
Mass media corporation that produces media in two or more countries
Ex: Netflix
Canadian Content
The amount of Canadian participation in Canada’s broadcasting industry: directing, writing, cinematography, etc.
Ex: The radio has to play Canadian music
Economic Globalization
Acts of globalization that relate to the economy: trade, imports, exports, money (ex: Transnational Companies like Walmart)
Social Globalization
Acts of globalization that relate to society: what we wear, the music we listen to, our beliefs and values
Political Globalization
Acts of globalization that relate to politics: government systems, alliances among countries, trade deals, etc.
Homogenization
A trend toward uniformity, as with world popular culture as a result of globalization
Ex: We all begin wearing the same clothing as a result of globalization
Monoculture
The uniform global popular culture that results from globalization
Ex: We all become one culture
Assimilation
The absorption of a minority group by a dominant group
Ex: The Aztec culture was “absorbed” by the Spanish
Marginalization
The pushing of a group to the “margins” of society where they hold little social, economic, or political power
Ex: Women, people of colour, LGBTQ groups, etc.
Accommodation
An inclusive approach that allows religious, or ethnic groups to maintain their distinctive cultures within mainstream society
Ex: Allowing police officers to wear religious headwear (hijab, turban, etc.)
Secularism
The complete separation between matters of state and religion
Ex: France not allowing any religious wear in public schools
Integration
The incorporation of diverse minority groups into mainstream society
Ex: Canada’s charter of rights and freedoms allows people to be different
Metropolises
Very large cities
Ex: Toronto, NYC, Los Angeles
Cosmopolitan
Reflecting many diverse cultures; worldly, sophisticated
Ex: Edmonton- has many diverse people
Acculturation
Change as a result of contact with other cultural groups
Ex: Japan accepts the Industrial Revolution after years of isolation
Co-operatives
Businesses owned jointly by their members who share profits
Ex: Miss Small owns 50% of the donut shop, Adam owns 50% of the donut shop
Cultural Revitalization
The process through which unique cultures regain a sense of identity, such as through promoting heritage, languages, or reviving traditions and customs
Ex: Indigenous peoples practicing and teaching their traditions and customs to the next generation
