Unit 1 - Properties Flashcards
a + 0 = a
Additive Identity Property
a + -a = 0
Additive Inverse Property
If a = b, then b = a
Symmetric Property of Equality
If a = b, then a+c = b+c
Addition Property of Equality
If a = b, then b may be used for a in any expression containing a.
(Basically simplification)
Substitution Property of Equality
(a+b) + c = a + (b + c)
or
a(bc) = (ab)c
Associative Property
If a = b, then a x c = b x c
Multiplication Property of Equality
a+b = b+a
Commutative Property
a (b+c) = ab + ac
Distributive Property
If a = b and b = c, then a = c
Transitive Property of Equality
a x 1 = a
Multiplicative Identity Property
a x 1/a = 1
Multiplicative Inverse Property
a (0) = 0
Multiplicative Property of 0
a (-1) = -a
Multiplicative Property of -1
If a = b, (and c does not = 0) then a/c = b/c
Division Property of Equality
