unit 1 - production of proteins Flashcards
what is DNA?
deoxyribonucleic acid. a molecule found in all life on earth
what is a genetic code?
the sequence of bases on a DNA molecule that is different for all living things
what does double stranded mean?
each DNA molecule is composed of 2 strands
what is a helix?
the twisted shape of the DNA molecule
what does complementary mean?
only A ‘matches’ with T and C with G
what is a base?
the part of DBA that forms the genitive code
what are adenine, thymine, guanine and cytosine all?
all bases
what is a gene?
a section of DNA that codes for a protein
what is mRNA?
a molecule which carries a complementary copy of the genetic code from the DNA, in the nucleus, to a ribosome
what is a ribosome?
the site of protein synthesis in cells
how many bases is DNA made up of?
4 - adenine, thymine, guanine, cytosine
the bases are completely? yes/no?
how do they match up?
yes
A-T adenine-thymine
C-G cytosine-guanine
what are proteins made from?
amino acids
where does the production of protein take place?
ribosomes
what are the 2 stages of protein production?
- a gene is made in the nucleus, this is called a messenger RNA
- the mRNA travels to a ribosome to determine the order of amino acids used
