Unit 1: Primary Producers Flashcards
Primary producers
- Are the basis of every food web in aquatic ecosystems
- Capable of self- nourishment by using inorganic materials as a source of nutrients
- use photosynthesis or chemosynthesis as a source of energy.
Primary Productivity
The rate at which energy is converted by photosynthetic and chemosynthetic autotrophs into organic substances
Prokaryote
A cellular organism with no nuclear membrane and no organelles, except ribosomes, and has genetic material in the form of coils or loops; all organisms in the Kingdom Monera.
Cladogram
A branching diagram depicting the successive points of species divergence from common ancestral lines without regard to the degree of deviation
Dichotomous key
A key for the identification of organisms based on a series of choices between alternative characters.
Photosynthesis
The synthesis of chemical compounds with the aid of radiant energy and especially light; formation or carbohydrates from CO2 and a source of hydrogen in the chlorophylll-containing cells exposed to light.
