Unit 1 List 2 Experimental Design Flashcards
Claim
a generalization based on a reported statistically significant effect
Constant
The factors that do not change during the experiment
Evidence
scientific methods that changes their belief in the truth of factual claims of the first to the fourth kind
Experimental bias
influence of the experimenter’s expectations, beliefs, or preconceived notions on the outcome of a study or research experiment
Experimental control
an element that remains unchanged or unaffected by other variables
Experimental procedure
in which an experiment is carried out
Manipulated variable
a factor that is purposefully and specifically changed by the experimenter
Hypothesis
an assumption, an idea that is proposed for the sake of argument so that it can be tested to see if it might be true
Qualitative data
data representing information and concepts that are not represented by numbers
Quantitative data
data represented numerically, including anything that can be counted, measured, or given a numerical value
Reason
using more-or-less rational processes of thinking
Responding variable
is what the scientist measures as a result of the test variable
Scientific method
is the process of objectively establishing facts through testing and experimentation
Scientific model
is a representation of a system of ideas, events or processes
Scientific question
an investigation can be designed and completed to find out the answer
Scientific theory
a hypothesis or a group of hypotheses about some phenomena that have been supported through research using the scientific method
Trends in data
a general change in one variable compared to another over a period of time
Valid experiment
how well you have controlled your experimental variables in order to maintain a fair test
