Unit 1 List 2 Experimental Design Flashcards
Claim
statements in science supported by data and research
Constant
The factors that do not change during the experiment.
Evidence
information collected via rigorous scientific methods that changes their belief in the truth of factual claims of the first to the fourth kind.
Experimental Bias
the unintentional influence of the experimenter’s expectations, beliefs, or preconceived notions on the outcome of a study or research experiment.
Experimental Control
an element that remains unchanged or unaffected by other variables
Experimental Procedure
the manner in which an experiment is carried out
Hypothesis
A statement about a specific research question, and it outlines the expected result of the experiment.
Manipulated Variable
the factor or condition that is purposely changed by the scientist
Qualitative Data
data representing information and concepts that are not represented by numbers
Quantitative Data
data represented numerically, including anything that can be counted, measured, or given a numerical value
Reason
the capacity of consciously applying logic by drawing valid conclusions from new or existing information, with the aim of seeking the truth.
Responding variable
what the scientist measures as a result of the test variable
Scientific Method
the process of objectively establishing facts through testing and experimentation
Scientific model
a physical and/or mathematical and/or conceptual representation of a system of ideas, events or processes
Scientific Question
one where an investigation can be designed and completed to find out the answer without having to do multiple, entirely different investigations to get there
Scientific Theory
an explanation of an aspect of the natural world and universe that can be or that has been repeatedly tested and has corroborating evidence in accordance with the scientific method, using accepted protocols of observation, measurement, and evaluation of results.
Trends In Data
a general change in one variable compared to another over a period of time
Valid Experiment
how accurately a method measures what it is intended to measure
