Unit 1 List 2 Experimental Design Flashcards
Claim
a statement saying that something happened a certain way or will happen a certain way
Constant
something invariable or unchanging
Evidence
anything that can be used to prove something
Experimental bias
the unintentional influence of the experimenter’s expectations, beliefs, or preconceived notions on the outcome of a study or research experiment
Experimental control
a scientific test done under controlled conditions, meaning that just one (or a few) factors are changed at a time, while all others are kept constant
Experimental procedure
the manner in which an experiment is carried out
Hypothesis
an idea or explanation that you then test through study and experimentation
Manipulated variable
If a scientist is testing the amount of water on plant growth, the amount of water would be the manipulated variable
Qualitative data
If there were a group of people in a room, qualitative data could describe how they feel, what they look like, what clothes they are wearing, or the motivations of why they’re here
Quantitative data
measures of values or counts and are expressed as numbers
Reason
a statement or fact that explains why something is the way it is, why someone does, thinks, or says something, or why someone behaves a certain way
Responding variable
the part of an experiment that a scientists measures and observes closely for a change or a response.
Scientific method
the process of objectively establishing facts through testing and experimentation.
Scientific model
a physical and/or mathematical and conceptual representation of a system of ideas, events or processes.
Scientific question
one where an investigation can be designed and completed to find out the answer without having to do multiple, entirely different investigations to get there.
Scientific theory
a well-substantiated explanation of some aspect of the natural world, based on a body of facts that have been repeatedly confirmed through observation and experiment.
Trends in data
the general change in a variable with time.
Valid experiment
a research method that accurately measures the effect of an independent variable on a dependent variable
