Unit 1 List 2 Experimental Design Flashcards
Claim
state or assert that something is the case, typically without providing evidence or proof.
Constant
occurring continuously over a period of time.
Evidence
be or show evidence of.
Experimental bias
the unintentional influence of the experimenter’s expectations, beliefs, or preconceived notions on the outcome of a study or research experiment
Experimental control
an element that remains unchanged or unaffected by other variables
Experimental procedure
Observation, Ask a Question, Form a Hypothesis, Design an Experiment, Make Predictions, Test the Hypothesis, and Form a Conclusion
Hypothesis
a proposition made as a basis for reasoning, without any assumption of its truth.
Manipulated variable
a factor that is purposefully and specifically changed by the experimenter
Qualitative data
data representing information and concepts that are not represented by numbers
Quantitative data
Quantitative data are data represented numerically
Reason
a statement or fact that explains why something is the way it is
Responding variable
what changes as a result of the manipulated variable
Scientific method
an empirical method for acquiring knowledge
Scientific model
a physical and/or mathematical and/or conceptual representation of a system of ideas, events or processes
Scientific question
investigation can be designed and completed to find out the answer without having to do multiple, entirely different investigations
Scientific theory
a well-substantiated explanation of some aspect of the natural world, based on a body of facts
Trends in data
describes the general change in a variable with time
Valid experiment
a research method that accurately measures the effect of an independent variable on a dependent variable
