Unit 1: Life on Earth Flashcards
Habitat
The place where an organism lives
Population
All the members of one species living in a habitat
Community
All the plants, animals and microorganisms living in a habitat
Producer and consumer
Producer- a green plant that uses sunlight to make its own food by photosynthesis
Consumer- an organism that cannot produce its own food, it gains energy but eating other organisms
Predator and prey
Predator- an animal which hunts and kills other animals for food
Prey- an animal which is hunted and killed by other animals for food
Biodiversity, food chain, food web and ecosystem
Biodiversity- the number, abundance and variety of a species
Food chain- a diagram which shows the transfer of energy between organisms
Food web- a diagram which shows inter-connected food chains
Ecosystem- an ecosystem is made up of all the organisms (the community) living in a particular habitats and the non-living parts with which the organisms interact. Ecosystem= habitat + community
What do food chains show, the arrow and what components make them up?
The feeding relationships between organisms
The arrow shows the direction of energy flow
1. Producer (plant)
2. Primary consumer (herbivore)
3. Secondary consumer (omnivore or carnivore)
4. Tertiary consumer (top carnivore)
What is a niche and what is predation?
A niche is the role that an organism plays within a community.
Predation is when organisms obtain food by hunting and killing prey organisms
