Unit 1 Lesson 3 Flashcards
What 5 gases make up most of the Earth’s air in the atmosphere?
N, O, Ar, CO, O3
Name 5 greenhouse gases
Water vapor H2O, CO2, Methane, O3, Nitrous Oxide, CFCs
What is the greenhouse effect?
The way that heat is trapped on Earth’s atmosphere by greenhouse gases. Some solar radiation is reflected off the earth/atmosphere and most is absorbed.
Why is ozone (O3) important?
It is reactive and absorbs uv rays, filtering harmful radiation.
Describe what is going on with the ozone layer.
It was depleting and efforts were made to reduce CFCS. There was first evidence of its recovery in 2003.
What causes uneven heating on the Earth?
Tilt axis.
In June solstice, _________ circle gets the most sunlight
the Arctic circle
In the December solstice, ________ circle gets the most sunlight.
Polar
What is the result of earth tilting on its axis as it rotates around the sun?
Seasons!
What kind of patterns does the tilting of Earth’s axis affect?
wind cycles and precipitation cycles
What is the Coriolis effect?
Deflection of winds is clockwise in the northern hemisphere and counterclockwise in the southern hemisphere.
wind at the equator moves (faster/slower) than at the poles.
faster. 1041 mph!
From what direction does wind usually blow in the tropics?
east
Name the 3 major factors that contribute to storms
wind, rain, temperature
Where are mountain shadow deserts in the tropics (i.e, Hawaii)?
west side of mountains
