Unit 1 : L4 - Network connections Flashcards
What is a wired connection?
A wired network uses copper cables or fibre optic cables to connect the components of a computer.
What is a wireless connection?
A wireless network uses radio signals to connect computers within its range.
What is a wireless router?
A wireless router connects the computer with the physical network.
What is a copper cable?
Digital data is sent in the form of electric signal through copper cables.
What are the 3 types of copper cables?
Coaxial
Unshiel twisted pair
Shield twisted pair
Coaxial :
Coaxial cables are to be replaced from time as the insulation may degrade.
Unshield twisted pair :
The data transmission is fast and crosstalk is reduced.
Shielded twisted pair :
Metal shielding is provided to twisted pair cables to reduce electromagnetic inter ference.
Advantages of copper cables :
. Telephones can be powered directly from this cable.
. Inexpensive to install.
Disadvantages of copper cables :
Short lifetime
What are fire optic cables?
These are made of glass and the digital data is transmitted in the form of light signal.
Advantages of fibre optic cable :
. Long lifetime
. Less electromagnetic interference when compared to copper cables.
Disadvantages of fibre optic cable :
. Expensive to install
What is the Ethernet?
This is one of the technologies to implement LAN’s since the 1980’s an it provides transmission rate of up 100 Gb/s.
What is the Ethernet network?
A Ethernet network is divided into various segments. Each segment has a UTP cable that is shared among a few device.
What is a wireless adapter?
It translates digital data into radio signals.
What is a wireless reciever?
It translates radio signals into binary so that the computer can understand it.
What is the Ethernet?
This is one of the technologies to implement LAN’s since the 1980’s an it provides transmission rate of up 100 Gb/s.
Advantages of wireless connection :
. Cheap and easy to install
. Multiple devices can be connected without any additional hardware.
Disadvantages of wireless connection :
. Slower compared to a wired network
. Security issues
What is WIFI?
It is a technology that enables wireless connecting to all sorts of devices E.g: laptops, smartphones
What does WIFI stand for?
Wireless Fidelity
How are radio signals identified?
These are identified using its frequency.
How much frequency does WIFI use?
2.4GHz - 5GHz
What is a channel?
It is a communication link to send a recieve data.
What are the 2 types of networks?
.Private networks are used in homes
.Public networks are available in malls, airports or restaurants
What do data packets contain?
They contain info of the sender and receiver such as device address.
What does NIC stand for?
Network interference card
What is NIC?
It is a small circuit board that is a part of the motherboard
What are the 3 types of mobile wifi networks?
GPRS - General packet radio service
3G - 3rd generation
4G - 4th generation
What is NIC used for?
needed to connect to the internet.
