Unit 1 (KA3) DNA and the Production of Proteins Flashcards
Describe the structure of DNA using keywords.
DNA is a double stranded helix with complementary base pairs.
Define DNA.
Deoxyribonucleic acid. A molecule found in all life on earth.
Define genetic code.
The sequence of bases on a DNA molecule that is different for all living things.
Name the four bases in DNA and state how they are paired.
Adenine, Thymine, Cytosine and Guanine. A-T and C-G.
Define ‘gene’.
A section of DNA that codes for a protein.
What is messenger RNA (mRNA)?
A complementary copy of part of the DNA (gene) made in the nucleus.
Explain what mRNA does.
Carries a complementary copy of the genetic code from the DNA, in the nucleus, to a ribosome to determine the order of amino acids used.
State where protein synthesis occurs.
The ribosome.
