Active’ citizenship,

Q

How does Loader et al. (2014) view modern citizenship?

A

Dutiful citizenship’

Adherence to the established norms and standards of conventional political behaviour; again, voting, following rules, and participating in conventional institutions such as political parties.

However among young people conventional ‘dutiful citizenship’ is giving way to alternative forms of citizenship in which social networks and networked communication are more important than conventional forms of civic dialogue and engagement.

Q

A set of activities that can be understood as an alternative to conventional forms of civic engagement?

A

Social enterprise.

Using market mechanisms to produce pro-social outcomes; this means through the commercial activities they engage in, the social benefit is produced.

By this criteria the for-profit business that gives a bit of money to charity is NOT a social enterprise, it just does a bit of charitable giving.
