Unit 1: Immunology Flashcards
How does the phagocytes detect the pathogens?
The pathogens give off waste
What’s a phagocyte?
A white blood cell which engulfs pathogens
What does the phagozone do?
It covers the pathogen in the phagocyte and stops the enzymes breaking anything else down
What is a pathogen?
A microbe that causes disease
What releases enzymes into the phagozone?
The lysosomes
What are the main types of lymphocytes used?
T cells
B cells
What do T cells do?
They attack any body cell affected
Where are the T cells matured?
Thymus gland
What do the B cells do?
Attack any pathogens in the bodily fluids
Where are B cells matured?
Bone marrow
Which cells are used in humoral immunity?
B cells
Which cells are used in cell mediated immunity?
T cells
What is antigen representation?
When the pathogen’s antigens are displayed on the infected cell
How do the T cells replicate?
Mitosis
What three things do T cells divide to do?
Become memory cells
Stimulate phagocytosis
Make B cells divide
What is produced when B cells are activated?
Plasma and memory cells
How do B cells divide?
Mitosis
Why can’t we take plasma out of animals we test on?
Because they loose their ability to divide
Why do we want plasma cells from other animals?
Because they form the antibodies we need
Why do we fuse plasma cells with tumor cells?
Tumor cells replicate quickly
What is created when we fuse a plana and tumor cell together?
A hybridoma/ monoclonal antibody
