Wabash vs Illinois
This was a Supreme Court case created in 1886. It stated that limited states from controlling interstate commerce. This court case was what started the Interstate Commerce commission.
Freedmen’s Bureau
This was a law created in 1865 by the War Department, and congress at the time. They were in charge of handling situations related to refugees, and free slaves.
Thaddeus Stevens
He was an American politician, and lawyer who was one of the members of the US reps from Pennsylvania during the 1860s. He was focused on ending slavery, and discrimination against blacks. During Reconstruction, Stevens fought to secure their rights.
Impeachment and Trial of Johnson
This was a trial that happened with Andrew Johnson the President of the US in 1868. He was acquitted by the U.S Senate for three months. This trial was considered very important, because
Andrew Johnson
He was the 17th President of the US from 1865 until 1869. He became the president after Abraham Lincoln was assassinated.
13th Amendment
This was a law created by congress, which stated that slavery was now abolished in the United States in 1865.
14th Amendment
This law stated that all slaves born in the US were now citizens. Congress passed this in 1866, the year after the Civil War.
15th Amendment
This law states that citizens in the US have the right to vote
Reconstruction Acts
This was a bill put into place by congress which divided the former Confederate states excluding Tennessee. This law would divide those states into five districts.
Southern Radical Reconstruction governments
The Reconstruction governments were an organization that started the first state funded school system. They wanted taxation to be equitable, racial discrimination needed to be banned.
Reedeemers
They were a political party group that was formed after the Civil War. Their goal was to make white supremacy more powerful.
Ku Klux Klan
They were a group of white supremacists
