Unit 1 Handout Flashcards
We cannot comprehend the divine. We cannot surround (comprehend) God ever. We can’t look at him and live, so we cannot describe him perfectly
Doctrine of incomprehensibility
Everything is either the Trinity or his creation (everything else). Not a difference in degree but in kind
Creator/creature distinction
The study of God and all things in relation to God
Definition of theology
we’re trying to study a God that if you look at his face, you’ll die. We need to be a humble creation (we receive theology)
Theological humility
God wants to be known and has taken many measures to make himself known (creation, Bible, Jesus)
- He _______ to our creaturliness –> an _____ to Moses
- Jesus is an ______ to the world
- All of these are acts of grace from a kind father
Accommodation
The world lies to us all the time but theology reminds us what is good, true, and beautiful
- God is reality
- Tell people the truth. Give it in kindness
Administers of Reality
What the Bible/biblical author teaches about a particular topic
Biblical Theology
What a particular figure or areas of thinkers said about a certain topic
Historical Theology
Does a particular topic make sense? Defense of faith
Philosophical Theology
The “so what?” Looking at all theology and looking at the structure/connectedness of the faith and its impact
Systematic Theology
- Prayer
- Exegesis - To draw the meaning out of Scripture
- Biblical Theology
- Historical and Philosophical Theology
- Systematic Theology
- Begin again
Theological Method
Words that mean different things when used in different contexts
Equivocal language
Words mean what we conceive of things they signify (exactly the same)
Univocal language
One word is a shadow of another…how we speak about God. (Ex. My dad is good. God is good.) Our words are too finite to describe God
Analogical Language
Ascribing a creaturely feature to a non-creature. The Bible does this to God because he is spirit.
Anthropomorphism
