Review basic geographic terms and tools in this deck.
What is geography?
Geography is the study of how things (ex. climate, populations, & the environment) change over space (think: regions) and time on the Earth’s surface.
What is BOLTSS?
An acronym of the parts of a map.
B = Border (The frame around the map)
O = Orientation (through a north arrow)
L = Legend (shows what symbols are used and what they represent)
T = Title (gives general information about what the map represents)
S = Scale (gives the perspective of size on the map compared to the actual size on Earth)
S = Symbols (represent different features on map)
Political Maps
They show national boundaries, capital, and major cities.
They do not show the land’s physical features.
Physical Maps
They show physical features such as rivers and mountains.
Green = lower elevations
Orange/Brown = higher elevations
Climate Maps
Show general information of climate and precipitation of a place using different colours.
Land-Use Resource Map
Features the type of natural resources/economic activity that dominates an area (use symbols).
Elevation Map
Shows elevation change through colour or shading
Topographic Map
Shows small areas with lots of detail. Elevation is shown through contour lines, and other natural/human features are shown.
