How do microorganisms get into the body?
Through broken skin, Gas-Exchange system and the digestive system
What is a disease?
A malfunction of body or mind which has an adverse effect on health
How does the body prevent the entry of pathogens?
Mucous layer covers exchange surfaces, production of enzymes break down the pathogens and stomach acid kills microorganisms
How do pathogens cause disease?
By damaging host tissues and by producing toxins
What is the definition of risk?
A measure of the probability that damage to health will occur as a result of a given hazard
Factors which affect likelihood of coronary heart disease
Smoking, high blood pressure, blood cholesterol levels, obesity, diet and physical activity
Measures taken that can reduce the risk of cancer
Giving up smoking, avoiding becoming overweight, reduction of salt intake, reduction of intake of cholesterol and saturated fats, taking regular aerobic exercise, limit on alcohol consumption and increasing fibre and antioxidant intake
