Unit 1 Carbon Cycle Flashcards
Carbon sink
A carbon reservoir that stores more carbon than it releases
Carbon source
A process that adds carbon to the atmosphere
Photosynthesis
Primary producers take co2 into their tissues to make sugar
Respiration
Co2 is returned to atmosphere as organisms break down sugar for energy (cellular respiration)
Exchange
Exchange of co2 b/w atmosphere and ocean
Sedimentation
Some dissolved CO2 i the ocean combines with calcium ions in the water to form CACO3, precipitating out of water to form limestone via sedimentation: dead organisms fall to ocean floor and break down into sediments
Burial
Slow process and largest carbon reservoir (sedimentary Rock), including dead biomass that got fossilized and buried (fossil fuel)
Extraction
Digging up/mining fossil fuels
Combustion
Naturally happens : fires and volcanoes
Direct exchange
Co2 moves directly b/w atmosphere and the ocean by dissolving into and out of ocean water at the surface
