Unit 1 Aquatic Biomes Flashcards
Salinity
Salt determines which species can survive and usability for drinking
Depth
Influences how much sunlight can penetrate and reach plant below the surface for photosynthesis
Flow
Determines how much co2 can dissolve into water and which plants/animals can survive
Temp
Warmer water holds less dissolved co2 so it can support fewer aq orgs
Estuaries
Where atm and ocean meet salt and freshwater mix
Types of estuaries
Temperate estuaries - characterized by salt tolerant grasses
Tropical estuaries - characterized by salt tolerant trees
Littoral zone
Shallow area of soil and water ( lots of photosynthesis)
Limnetic zone
Deeper - only algae exists and extends as deep as sunlight penetrates
Profundal zone
Deepest zone - no producers limited o2
Benthic zone
Lake bottom
Oligotrohpic
Lakes with low pp due to limiting nutrients such as n and p
Mesotrohic
Lakes with moderate levels of pp
Eutrophic
High pp
