Developments in the trinity
Council of Nicea
• At the Council of Nicea it argued that Arianism was heretical- Jesus was God and God the father and God the Son are equal.
• It also put together the Nicene Creed
Development in the trinity
Council of Constantinople
• At the Council of Constantinople it argued that the Holy Spirit was also God
The trinity in the Bible
• At the baptism of Jesus (Matthew 3:13-17) the 3 persons of the Trinity are mentioned.
• In John 1:1-18 it mentions how the Word, Jesus, has always been present with the Father and the Holy Spirit.
What qualities does Genesis creation story say about God ?
• Genesis 1 shows the power of God the Father; how He creates out of nothing.
• It shows His benevolence, how what God creates is good.
• The eternity of God is also shown; He is there before the heavens and the earth.
• Genesis 2 & 3 shows how humanity disobeys God, leading to sin.
Interpretations of creation story:
Catholics/metaphorically
Catholics view the creation story as a metaphor. It teaches Catholics of the power of God, but they believe that the world was caused/created by the Big Bang. It is God who brings it about. Furthermore creation teaches Catholics of the need of God and how we turn away from God.
Interpretations of creation story:
Creationists/literalists
Many traditional protestants believe that the Bible is the Word of God, everything in it is true. Therefore the world was made in 6 days. The Big Bang and Evolution is not accepted.
How humans are made in the imago dei
- Human beings are rational
- Human beings have free will and
conscience - Human beings can relate to God
- Human beings can give and
receive love
Dominion
Humans authority over the world
Stewardship
Humans responsibility to look after the land that comes with the authority
Why is the Incarnation important?
• The incarnation is important because it shows the love of God the Father to send his Son to earth
• It shows us what God is like as He reveals himself through Jesus
• It means that we can achieve salvation- belief in Jesus can lead to eternal life
• It also means that Jesus was human just like us- he experiences the same things
Paschal mystery
Life
Death
Resurrection
Ascension
Redemption
Humans are forgiven of their sins by the sacrifice of Jesus
Salvation
The process of being saved from sin and returning back to God
Justification
By living a good life and performing good actions humanity has the chance of eternal life.
Why is salvation from sin needed?
Sin prevents us from having a full relationship with God.
Jesus’ role on earth was to save us from sin. He does so on the cross.
Why is grace needed?
• It is the gift of God’s love which helps us in our lives
• It is received in the sacraments. Especially the gift of the Holy Spirit- this helps us live our faith out in the world- evangelise.
When in the Mass and the sacraments is salvation made known?
• In Baptism we are forgiven from sin and enter into the Church.
• In the other sacraments we receive God’s grace (love) and the help to live a good Christian life.
• At the Mass we receive the Eucharist, as well as hear from the Bible the Word of God and teachings that help lead to salvation.
Judgement
• Particular judgement- the judgement that happens immediately at the death of an individual
• Last judgement- the last day when all will be judged, both living and dead. Their soul will be judged where it will end; parable of the sheep and the goats
Resurrection
• The belief that the soul lives on when we die
• ALSO when the last day happens our souls will be united again with our bodies which are made better.
• ‘I believe in the resurrection of the body’
• Not all Christians believe in the resurrection of the body and whether it is just the soul, or the body as well.
Where do Catholics go after death?
Heaven
Hell
Purgatory - A place of waiting where our sings are forgiven and we are made ready for heaven, if we accept the love of God
Why are teachings about life after death important?
• Catholics believe that the fact we are judged means we should try to live good lives.
• Means that Catholics will follow scripture, the teaching of the Church, and take part in the Mass and the sacraments; They will not live sinful lives.
• It also means that Catholics will feel that their lives have a purpose.
Divergent beliefs of life after death
• Non-Catholics do not believe in purgatory as it is not in the Bible
• Some protestants, mainly evangelicals, believe that the soul and the body remain in the grave until the last day, and then those who have rejected God’s love go to hell, and those who believe and lived good lives go to heaven.
• Many Christians believe that the soul goes to heaven or hell immediately after death, but is then united with the body on the last day.
• Some Christians do not believe in hell whatsoever as it goes against a benevolent God, and we should learn from our earthly mistakes.
