In order to restore order and harmony, societies must encourage loyalty, trustworthiness, and respect for elders.
How can you attain the principles of Confucianism?
By learning history, literature, and philosophy. You must constantly reflect upon your own behavior, and live an ethical life.
What are the religious/spiritual texts of Confucianism called?
The Analects.
How have Confucian ideals influenced Chinese government?
Confucianism became a big part of the education system. So much so that government officials had to master the Confucian ideals to pass their exams.
Confucianism does not deal with harsh punishments. Confucius says to guide people with virtue and align them with their roles.
What are the 5 key relationships in Confucianism?
Elder sibling over younger sibling
Husband over wife
Father over son
Ruler over subject
Friend is equal to friend
What was the thought behind the 5 key principles?
In general, one side had more power. That side was to behave morally, with concern for the other person. That would help the inferior person in the relationship behave well, with respect. These relationships were meant to create balance and harmony.
What were the familial/gender roles in Confucianism?
The family was seen as a mini-government. Men came first, women were meant to take care of the family and manage the household.
How did Confucianism affect society politically and economically?
Because Confucianism emphasized proper behavior, it created opportunities for common people to improve themselves and gain higher social positions.
Confucianism was a belief system that was distinctly political, and was less concerned with the mystical and the divine. Confucius and his followers focused on more worldly affairs, such as maintaining harmony in the government and community.
