Unit 1 APES Flashcards
Biome
An area that shares an average yearly temperature and precipitation pattern
Reservoir
things that temporarily store matter
Source
processes that move matter around between reservoirs
Sink
reservoirs that store matter than they give off
Carbon source
return carbon to the atmosphere
carbon sink
remove carbon from the atmosphere, storing more carbon than they release
nitrogen fixation
process of N2 gas from the atmosphere being converted into biologically available nitrogen such as ammonia (NH3) or nitrate (NO3)
assimilation
plants taking in nitrogen from the soil or animals taking in nitrogen by eating plants
ammonification
soil microbes or bacteria converting organic matter/waste into ammonium (NH4)/ ammonia (NH3)
nitrification
soil bacteria converting into ammonium(NH4), into nitrate (NO3)
dentrification
soil bacteria converting NO3/NO2 into N2O/N2 gas
evaporation
sunlight hits liquid water, heating it into a vapor that enters the atmosphere
precipitation
water vapor in the atmosphere condenses as the air cools due to its increased elevation away from the warmth of earth’s surface (from solar radiation) and falls as rain/snow
primary productivity
RATE at which plants/producers in an area convert sunlight into glucose or other biological molecules
