Unit 1 - Anatomy - General Movement Terms Flashcards
Abduction
Moving farther from the midline
Adduction
Moving closer to the midline
Circumduction
Circular movement of a limb, combining flexion, extension, abduction, and adduction.
Diagonal Abduction
Movement of a limb through a diagonal plane away from the midline
Diagonal Adduction
Movement of a limb through a diagonal plane across the midline
External Rotation
Rotary movement around longitudinal axis of a bone away from the midline
Internal Rotation
Rotary movement around longitudinal axis of a bone toward the midline
Dorsiflexion
Flexion of the ankle that results in the top of the foot moving toward the anterior tibia bone
Plantar Flexion
Extension of the ankle that results in the foot and toes moving away from the body (toes pointed down)
Inversion
When the medial border of the foot is raised such that the sole of the foot is turned inward
Eversion
When the lateral border of the foot is raised such that the sole of the foot is turned outward
Supination
The lateral rotation of the hand and forearm such that the palm faces forward, in anatomical position
Pronation
The medial rotation of the hand and forearm such that the palm faces backward from the anatomical position
Protraction
Forward movement away from the spine; moving in a forward direction
Retraction
Backward movement toward the spine; moving in a backward direction
Opposition
Diagonal movement of the thumb across the palmar surface or to contact a finger
Repostition
Movement of thumb back to anatomical position
Elevation
Involves the raising up to a more superior position
Depression
Involves the pulling down to a more inferior position
