Unit 1 Flashcards
Unit 1/3 for the midterm in Medical Cannabis at PWE
What does it Mean to be Medicine (if Cannabis is a medicine)?
-Works on a range of conditions
-Minimal side effects
-Doesn’t work well for some patients (not all)
Ex: “Charlotte’s Web” seizure patient using MC dramatically INC quality of life, inspires parents of kids w/ similar conditions and to move to Colorado found it didn’t work as well for them. ~65% success
Harry Anslinger’s (HA) case and Why to Cautiously Listen to Information
HA’s case, he was arrested for (almost certainly) killing his family, police blamed it on crazy from smoking MJ, “Marijuana Maniac”, blown up by media.
He has Scz, maybe H (deal w/ symptoms), and was tried 1y b4 murder to be put in a facility (was known sick).
Anecdotal History
Personal testimonials of exp, must be listened to carefully. There are 4 million smokers who will testify that has caused them no health problems, survivorship bias. C&E w/out bias is possible via science.
The Placebo Effect
-Placebo surgery has shown to be effective! (Finland cartilage & vertebroplasty repair)
-It can still work, even if you know its a placebo! IBS ~“mind-body healing placebo process”
-They work better now vs b4 (Expectations)
-Brand name impacts result
-Price impacts result (Parkinson’s $$$ vs $)
-Can negate drug effects (Brain scans study of pain killers/placebo)
-It can impact fertility (Polycystic F trying to get pregnant, 5 of the 33 success)
-Bigger production, bigger effect (shot > pill in placebo effect)
-It has phys and psych responses (Dental study, endorphins may fault here)
-It was discovered to protect consumers (Metal rod therapy)
-“snake oil”, sometimes had drugs, can be very powerful!!!.
Science isn’t Black and White
Science is “dicey”, fertilizer guy used recipe to make bombs. Moniz awarded Nobel prize for lobotomy. Lobotomy later found to be faulty and discarded.
Lobotomy and Science
Once famous now disregarded medical procedure “curing” anything from mood disorder to hallucinations to ANX. Phineas Gage inspired, later found to be cr, focus, and pers killer thankfully stamped out by French medicine in ‘52.
Not really based on science, inconsistent results, impacted by confirmation bias, and relied on placebo effect.
Corr. and Media Claims
Media, infographics, and commercials make extreme claims like “Enjoy better sex, legalize MJ” (MJ = better sex). How much is corr?
On other end, “MJ use in teens linked w/ bad news” OR failing student using MJ to cope?
CORR DOES NOT = CAUSE!
John Snow Water Pump Experiment
After repeated failed attempts to solve cholera, John Snow acknowledges the TRA of deaths due to cholera. Finds water company use (Hence pump location, S&V was down stream, Lambeth up) is corr to deaths; not wealth, race, location, age, job, ect. Deaths in the water companies were statistically significant.
Random Assignment
Imptnt to solving cholera problem. Nutritional supplement ex, gym bros are ML to sign up and hence its ML to work for them b/c bias. Ctrl for this w/ random control, not always possible/ethical.
As you move up the studies pyramid:
Case reports/ series > case ctrl studies > Cohort studies (all not RCT) > RCT > Systematic reviews > Meta-analysis
As you move up, methodology STR, bias DEC, ctrl for comparison, and # of studies DEC
Good Rsch Articles have…
Citations, proper language/grammar, and peer reviews (these can be paid for)
