What is political power
Ability of governments, institutions, and political leaders to make decisions that affect society. These powers are often exercised through laws, policies, and enforcement mechanisms
What is social power
The ability of an individual, group, or institution to influence or control the behavior, beliefs, or actions of others within a social context
What is economic power
Economic power refers to the ability of individuals, companies, or countries to control resources, trade, and wealth. Often overlaps with political power
What is cultural power
The ability to shape or influence cultural norms, ideas or values.
What is legal citizenship
This is the formal membership or status of an individual within a sovereign state, recognized by that state’s laws
What is active citizenship
The involvement and participation of individuals in the political and social realm. Active citizens participate in things like meetings, social groups, committees, and councils
What is global citizenship
In today’s interconnected world, this idea has emerged. This idea emphasizes responsibility to the global community focusing on issues like human rights, environmental sustainability, and international peace. Challenges people to think beyond the borders of their own countries.
How do power and citizenship effect us
Citizens have the power to influence social change, but the extent of their influence depends on their ability to participate in political processes, organize socially, and access resources. Citizenship rights give people the platform to challenge resting power structures. Gives individuals the right to participate in democratic processes, which is a form of power. In democratic societies, citizens hold the power to vote, influence laws, and demand change. However, the effectiveness of this power can vary based on factors like political representation, access to education, and social inequality
What are political movements
Involves collective efforts to change laws or Policies. Movements for civil, women’s rights and environmental justice are examples of social change driven by political activism
What is an example of political movements
The Civil Rights movement in the United State of America. This sough to end racial segregation and discrimination. Brough lots of change, both social and legal
What is economic change
Shifts in the way an economy functions, which can include alterations in the structure, processes, or outcomes of economic systems
What is an example of economic change
Industrialization and the rise of capitalism are big ones, as they play a huge role in what jobs are available in different places and how many jobs are open
What is cultural change
The modernization or transformation of cultural practices, beliefs, values that are seen around the world
What is an example of cultural change
The Pride Movement has played a critical role in advocating for LGBT+ rights and visibility. Pride parades, which started in the 1970s as a response to police brutality and discrimination, have now become global celebrations of LGBT+ culture, identity, and equality
What is technological change
Advances in technology that can drive rapid social change, changing the way we work, live, and interact
What is an example of technological change
The advent of the internet and smartphones has revolutionized communication, education, and entertainment, creating a more globalized world
How does social change and power effect us
Power plays a key role in driving/resisting social change. Social change often arises when marginalized/oppressed groups challenge existing power structures. Can take the form of protests or social movements, even sometimes revolutions. For example the feminist movement challenged patriarchal power structures.
What is democratic participation
Refers to the active involvement of citizens in the decision-making processes and political activities of a democratic society
What is social justice and advocacy
Closely related concepts that focus on promoting fairness, equality, and human rights in society
What are global perspectives
refers to an understanding and awareness of the interconnectedness of the world, where individuals, groups, and nations recognize their roles and responsibilities in relation to global issues and the shared challenges and opportunities faced by humanity
