Characteristics or traits that define a culture include:
beliefs, customs, laws
Culture Examples: celebrating holidays, attending sporting events, family traditions
Cultural Diffusion
The spreding of cultures, belifs, practices around the world
Government
Created to protect resources and property, as well as to provide services that individuals cannot give themselves
Dictatorship
CONTROLLED BY ONE usually a single person who has taken hold of a government by force
Democracy
ruled by the people
Limited government
limits the power of the person or group in charge
Unlimited government
the leader of the country has unlimited power and the citizens have to do what he commands
Ex: North Korea
Citizens in a dictatorship
may be punished, jailed, or even executed for not supporting the dictator’s policies or political parties.
People’s Right
rights that all humans should have access to.
Economics
is the study of how people meet their wants and needs.
GDP
total value of all goods and services produced in a country in a year; used to compare the economies of different countries
Standard of living
A measure of wealth, comfort, material goods, and necessities available to a person —measure of living conditions using factors such as life expectancy, education (literacy rate), and GDP per capita
TIPS
higher literacy rate and GDP per capita= longer life expectancy
lower literacy rate and GDP per capita= shorter life expectancy
Command economy
government makes all basic economic decisions
Free Enterprise System (market economy)
individual people and businesses make all the economic decisions
Mixed economy
people and the government make the economic decisions. Ex: the United States
