Unit 1 Flashcards
What is an alpha particle?
A helium nucleus equivalent
What is a continuous spectrum?
It is produced by white light from incandescent sources and appears like a rainbow.
What is an electron?
A negatively charged subatomic particle
What is an electron configuration?
The location and number of electrons in the energy levels of an atom.
What is an emission spectrum?
Produced by light from excited gas, viewed through a spectroscope.
What is an Energy level diagram?
It represents the relative energies of an atom’s electrons, used to find the configuration.
What is a gamma ray?
A photon
What is ground state?
It is an atom’s typical state, the atom must emit photons that exactly match each jump.
What is intermolecular force?
A force that causes one molecule to attract another, such as dipole-dipole, hydrogen bonding, and London dispersion forces.
What is intramolecular force?
Forces within a molecule, such as ionic and covalent bonds.
What is ionic bond?
The electrostatic bond between oppositely charged ions.
What is ionization energy?
The amount of energy for an atom to become its maximum ion, atoms have a finite diameter and IE because photons’ energy exceeds rings.
What is isoelectronic?
When to atoms have the same electrons they are isoelectronic.
What is a line spectrum?
An emission spectrum containing of separate isolated lines.
What is a neutron?
A neutral subatomic particle.
