Reference Maps
regular maps showing cities, mountains, roads, or boundaries
Cartography
Science of making maps
Projection
Process of taking a location and making it a flat map. Most common projection: Robinson projection. All maps have some sort of distortion (shape, distance, land mass, direction)
Meridian
arc drawn on map between N and S poles, main ones: Prime Meridian and Intern data line
Parallel
circle drawn around theglobe parralel to equator, right angles to meridian
Time Zones
USA 4: Central, Mountain, Eastern, Pacific, time zones based on greenwhich england, due to power when created. New time zone every 15 degrees longitude. 1 degree 69 miles
so new tz every 1035 miles
Greenwhich mean time
the time in that time zone, which is in prime meridian/0 degrees longitude
International Date Line
arc that mostly follows 180 degrees longitude, but deviates in several places. When going east towards america, goes back 24 hrs, when going west towards asia, goes forwad 24 hrs

maps highlighting a single variable
Isoline maps
Shows lines that connect points of equal value. topographic maps
Choropleth Maps
uses color or shading to show level of variable within regions
Dot maps
variable represented with dots, showing density
proportional symbol map
size of bar or shape changes based on occurences
cartogram
landmass distored based on level of variable
