UNIT 1 Flashcards
Essential Nutrients
The nutrients that must be provided directly by foods for survival. The body has no means of producing these organically. They must be consumed. Ex: water.
Marconutrients (Energy Yielding Nutrients)
Carbohydrates Lipids, proteins, and water
Mirconutrients
Vitamins and most minerals
Food
Any substances that the body can take in and assimilate that will enable it to stay alive and to grow.
Nutrition
the study of the nutrients and other biologically active compounds in foods and the body; sometimes also the study of human behaviors related to food.
Nutrients
components of food that are indispensable to the body’s functioning. They provide energy, serve as building material, help maintain or repair body parts, and support growth. This includes all marco and mirco nutrients.
Genome
the full complement of genetic material in the chromosomes of a cell.
DNA
deoxyribonucleic acid, the molecule that encodes genetic information in its structure
Genes
Units of a cells inheritance, made of the chemical DNA. Each gene directs the making of one or more proteins, which perform important tasks in the body.
Epidemiological studies
A study of a whole population
Case Study
A study of individuals.
Intervention study
A study in which researchers actively intervene to alter peoples eating habits.
Laboratory Studies
Studies that use specialized locations and equipment to pinpoint specific mechanism by which something acts.
What is AMDR
Acceptable Micronutrients Distribution range
What is the best method of obtaining dietary information?
Food frequency: A method of study that tracks the dietary habits of many people simultaneously .
