What is Sociology
the study of how groups and society shape people, including patterns of social relationships and social interaction
What is Psychology
the study of the human mind and individual sources of behaviour, ex. mental and emotional processes, motivation, learning, perception
What is Anthropology
the study of humankind and their origins as a species and their culture
Social Institution
the established patterns of beliefs, behaviors and relationships that organize social life
Kinship
refers to all of a family’s relatives - uncles, aunts, cousins, grandparents, in-laws, etc.
Patriarchal
the man rules the family, clan or tribe
Matriarchal
a woman who rules the family, clan or tribe
Egalitarian relationship
marriage in which the couple are equal partners in decision making
Monogomy
having one marital partner
Polygamy
the marriage of one person to more than one person of the opposite sex
Polygyny
the marriage of a male to multiple women
Polyandry
the practice of a wife having several husbands
Role
the set of behaviours that an individual is expected to demonstrate within a status
Status
a specific position within a social group
Arranged Marriage
marriages that take place through negotiations between sets of parents or an outside agent
Ethnocentrism
the tendency to evaluate behaviour from the point of view of your own culture
Nature
pre-wiring and is influenced by genetic inheritance and other biological factors
Nurture
The view that humans acquire all or almost all their behavioural traits from “nurture” (environment) and people around them
