Unit 1 Flashcards
What is a structure?
A structure is something put together/constructed
Ex: the shape; the materials made out of
What is a function?
A function is how it works; what it does
With a different structure will the function be different?
If you change the structure you will change the function
How does the structure define the function?
the structure is the “ingredients”, and it will define the function of the object
Can the PMC model help determine what is alive and what isn’t?
It can. Scientists can determine if its living by following it.
What is the P in PMC?
P is Program it is DNA, and it is what animals and we use
What is the M in PMC?
M is metabolism it is all about getting and using energy
EX: food and photosynthesis
What is the C in PMC?
C is container it is a cell membrane to keep it separate from the rest of the environment in or out
How are organelles different from organs?
Organelles are a sub cellular structure that has one or more specific jobs to perform in the cell, while organs are a group of different tissues that form singular units and perform a similar function organs vs organism
How are a population, community, and ecosystem the same and different?
Populations, community, and ecosystem are the same because they consist of all living things. They are different because populations are the same group of species an a specific environment, a community is a group of interacting species (same or different) co-existing together), and a ecosystem is a group of living organisms that interact w/each other in a environment
List in order on the levels of organization that biologists study.
atom -> molecule -> organelles -> cells -> tissues -> organs -> organ system -> organism -> population -> community -> ecosystem -> biome -> biosphere
What is the difference between a cell and tissue and how are they the same?
Tissues are formed by cells of similar functions being grouped together. Cells are the smallest structural functional units of organisms while tissues are clusters of specialized cells.
