1.5 study guide Flashcards
Dependent variable
the variable that depends on other factors that are measured
independent variable
The independent variable is the variable the experimenter manipulates or changes and is assumed to directly affect the dependent variable
control group
a scientific experiment is a group separated from the rest of the experiment, where the independent variable being tested cannot influence the results.
experimental group
the group that receives the variable being tested in an experiment
How are an independent variable different from a dependent variable?
The independent variable is the cause. Its value is independent of other variables in your study. The dependent variable is the effect. Its value depends on changes in the independent variable.
What is a hypothesis?
a supposition or proposed explanation made on the basis of limited evidence as a starting point for further investigation.
How do you write out a hypothesis?
if _____ then __________ because _____
What is the importance of a control group?
Control group and experimental groups are identical except the treatment or intervention believed to have an effect on the dependent variable
What is standard deviation?
statistics that measure the spread/range of a data group
(the wider the spread= larger the standard deviation)
What does a hypothesis have to be in order to be good?
specific, testable, explanatory
variable
anything that can be changed
